East Anglian Shetland Pony Group Driving Day
Report and photographs by Diane Randell

The telephone rang at 7am – I knew it would be Janet for a rain check!
Our skies had brightened, the down pour over, so this I relayed to Janet as encouragement as the weather front was passing through north to south, meaning good weather was heading her way!
Janet and Nigel Sycamore were to host the Shetland driving day and had already been to check their field where the event was to take place. Normally after heavy rainfall the land would be a wash with surface water, but as the recent baking weather had scorched their paddocks the over night rain had thankfully filtered away. The driving day was on!
Bright sunshine greeted the five turnouts, as they set off for the morning drive along the leafy lanes of Shimpling, ably lead by Janet driving Lola. Marshalling the junctions gave me the opportunity to see the fine procession file past. The Shetlands were clearly enjoying themselves, setting a steady but active pace, and quite a sight en-mass!

Arriving back at our venue another turnout had arrived and lots of non-driving participants ensuring some good banter took place over lunch. Janet’s lunches are always something to look forward to and this was no exception. We all basked in some hot sunshine for the quick quiz, before harness was fitted once again and ponies put to.

Through intermittent showers a fun cones competition with handy pony elements, was set out for everyone to have a go – it was great fun and very friendly.
Everyone received a rosette that took part in the morning drive and the fun cones competition was won by Colin Pyke 2nd John Snowdon 3rd Anna Mann 4th Jessi Bowling 5th Rachel Shahgaghi 6th Eilleen Snowdon.
A great day out in Shetland company, which Janet and Nigel plan to repeat next year.
