| Group Riding Demonstration Alison and Alan Bromwich kindly hosted a Group Spring Riding Demonstration at their Somersham home near Ipswich, Suffolk. Julie Barton and Linzi Aitken, well known in the area for producing M & M ponies, demonstrated how to back a Shetland pony using Alison’s four year old stallion, Waulkmill Redstart. Together Julie and Linzi talked through the fundamental safety procedures which they use for backing and breaking a pony, starting from which tack they use and how to introduce it to the pony as they were fitting it to Red. Out in the enclosed area Lungeing, backing and riding took place with members able to ask questions during the procedure; finding it very useful to have advice regarding any problems which may arise. Seeing a Shetland used for the demonstration was invaluable rather than a larger pony or horse. Claylands Lady Jeanette, another of Alison’s Shetlands, was the next pony into the area. Her role was to show correct turnout of pony, rider and handler for a Lead Rein class, followed by ring procedure. During the demonstrations there was lots of important information being put over to members plus there were lots of laughs and fun as all concerned were clearly enjoying themselves! Lastly, using black stallion, Buckland Oliver, Julie and Linzi went through the elements of a First Ridden class. Lunch at the near by pub was enjoyed by members followed by a chance to meet more of Alison and Alan’s ponies including the latest addition born a few weeks earlier. Many thanks to the Bromwich family – especially for the coffee and cake! |

| SHETLAND SNIPPETS Suffolk Punch Trust Stud Tour During the spring months leading up to the busy show season the East Anglian Shetland Pony Group likes to have the occasional social, and on this occasion fifty one members booked in to have a guided tour of the Suffolk Punch Stud, at Hollesley in Suffolk. The overwhelming response necessitated two afternoon tours in early April. Bruce Smith the Manager/Head Groom, who was to guide us around the stud, welcomed members. What a treat unfolded during the afternoon as Bruce explained the work of the Trust to promote and save the Suffolk Punch breed (now rarer than the Giant Panda), he gave us the history behind the Colony name and how the Trust was formed, plus the future plans for the stud, showing us a model of the proposed development of a new visitor centre. There were forty six horses at the Stud 31 of which were Suffolk Punches, with three new arrivals which members were introduced to. Bruce talked us through various agricultural implements, which the horses would have been used to pull, plus the grand show wagons, which are used for displays at the County Shows. The harness room was a grand sight with harness hanging wall to wall. Two Suffolk Punch horses were harnessed to a custom-built people carrier, which transported us to the Birds of Prey area. Members were delighted to see various hawks, owls and buzzards close up, plus some were also flown for us and we were dressed in a leather gauntlet to experience the birds flying to our hand. From Eric the mighty Suffolk Punch stallion to the new filly foal, members could marvel at how the breed is designed to be a draught equine – not unlike our own Shetland breed but on a slightly larger scale! |
| EAST ANGLIAN SHETLAND PONY GROUP Secretary and Joint Treasurer: Diane Randell Tel: 01692 538241 Joint Treasurer: Jessica Pye Tel: 01603 871213 2007 - OUR 10TH ANNIVERSARY YEAR This year is a bumper busy year to celebrate ten years of the East Anglian Group. What a glorious start we enjoyed with a dry day and warm sunshine to welcome members to a lunch and guest speaker at the Burghwood Stud, Norfolk, hosted by Diane and Tom Randell. Over half the membership navigated the country lanes of North Norfolk for this our first social gathering of the year. After much catching up of news over a buffet lunch, a large raffle was drawn, followed by guest speaker, local character Veterinary Surgeon, Mr. Graham Duncanson of the Westover Surgery based in North Walsham. Graham lectures nationally and internationally on equine dentistry and gave an interesting account of his early days in practice followed by a question and answer session. Members were then welcome to meet the Burghwood ponies relaxing in their paddocks. Apart from being a great get- together after the long winter months, the lunch also raised £200 for Group funds. Secretary: Mrs. Diane Randell, Burghwood Stud, Nixons Farm, Skeyton, Norwich, Norfolk. NR10 5AP. Tel/Fax: 01692 538241 The East Anglian Shetland Pony Group was
re-formed in 1997, with our first inaugural meeting hosted by Mrs. Jean Carlisle at her
Thrandeston Stud, Near Diss, Norfolk. We have remained in the location of Thrandeston
(moving to the village hall) for subsequent meetings as a central point of the group. Mrs.
Pat Renwick attended that first meeting to give helpful pointers for running a group.Five
years on and our membership have slowly grown to 58. The main aim of our group is to have
fun with our Shetland ponies. Some of our past events included Mr. Dougal Dick, who gave
an excellent talk on showing; using members ponies to demonstrate, followed by a lively
long reining demonstration by Mr. Mike Daniel with Shetlands and his own Friesian horses.
Vivien Hampton gave an informative morning talk/demo on breaking Shetlands to ride, with
an afternoon session dedicated to driving, by group members, John and Eileen Snowdon. Both
sessions had a useful "have a go" section. Social gatherings also play a part in
our group with lunches, barbecues and stud visits. |
